Industry-University Workshop on Power Engineering Needs for the Wind Industry

May 7-8, 2008 - Broomfield, Colorado

Co-sponsored by the Utility Wind Integration Group and the U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory

As in all fields dealing with power engineering, there is a growing realization that serious steps need to be taken soon in order to encourage the development of the power systems engineering professionals needed for the future of the wind industry. The purpose of this workshop, co-sponsored by UWIG and NREL, was to explore, discuss and help catalyze action on meeting the power engineering needs of the wind industry.

A major goal of the workshop was to increase the visibility of engineering career opportunities in the wind industry, with an emphasis on power engineering. Toward this end, the workshop discussions highlighted growing needs for power engineering professionals knowledgeable in all aspects of wind energy. The workshop also addressed sources of support for university research and education programs capable of expanding the numbers of qualified engineering graduates and launching them onto rewarding career paths in the wind and electric power communities. Specific goals included

  • Summarizing wind power's prospective roles in the nation's energy picture
  • Highlighting the need for new professionals in the wind industry
  • Determining the extent of the problem of finding new power engineers for the wind industry
  • Identifying steps the industry can take to help develop the necessary sources of new graduates
  • Identifying critical partners to work with in developing these new graduates
  • Build on the November 2007 National Science Foundation Workshop on the Future Power Engineering Workforce (download the executive summary)

UWIG is pleased to make available the presentation made by Wanda Reder, President of the IEEE Power and Energy Society.
