Fall Turbine O&M Users Group Meeting Draws Near
The UWIG Turbine Operations & Maintenance Users Group will meet in Memphis, Tennessee September 13-14 at the Peabody Memphis. This will be the eighth meeting under this user group’s new scope, membership requirements, and participation limitations. The morning of September 13 will consist of a Plenary Session open to user group members and interested parties from UWIG member organizations. The Plenary Session at this meeting will focus on characterizing and managing the costs of wind turbine and wind plant O&M.
The afternoon of September 13 will be devoted to meetings of the GE and Vestas Roundtables with the morning of September 14 devoted to meetings of the Siemens, Clipper, and Mitsubishi/Gamesa Roundtables. These manufacturer-specific Roundtable Forums are for turbine owner/operators only. They provide the opportunity for frank and open discussion among users, who will share their information, knowledge and experience. A networking reception will take place the evening of September 13. Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a technical tour of Nordex USA’s turbine manufacturing facility on September 14.

Details Posted, Registration Open for Solar Integration, Fall Technical Workshops
UWIG has scheduled a week of events devoted to integration of variable generation in October at Lahaina, Hawaii. The schedule of events kicks off with a Solar Integration Workshop co-sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy on October 11, which is then followed by meetings of the UWIG User Group and a technical tour on October 12. The week culminates with the 2011 Fall Technical Workshop, which takes place October 13-14.
A block of rooms has been arranged at the Sheraton Maui. Rates are $189 per night for Resort/Mountain View rooms and $205 per night for Run of Ocean View rooms. Application Process for 2012-2013 UWIG Scholarships to Open in Fall
In 2008, UWIG announced a program to offer scholarships to students pursuing careers in wind/electric power engineering and wind turbine/plant maintenance. UWIG awarded scholarships in 2009, 2010, and earlier this year. In an attempt to attract a broader and deeper pool of participants, the opening of the application cycle for the 2012-2013 academic term will open in October and close in January. The revised program will offer up to three $2000 scholarships and two $1000 scholarships. More details, including application instructions as well as deadlines, will be posted on the UWIG web site.
IEEE Power & Energy Magazine Issue on Wind Integration to be Published
UWIG is working with the IEEE Power & Energy Society to put together the November/December 2011 issue of Power & Energy Magazine, which will focus on large-scale wind integration. UWIG Executive Director Charlie Smith and Brian Parsons of NREL are serving as co-guest-editors for this issue, which follows ones focusing on wind integration issues published in 2005, 2007, and 2009.
