UWIG News and Notes

Wind Integration Short Course Details Finalized

UWIG, along with AWEA and Energynautics, is co-sponsoring a presentation of the comprehensive short course, Wind Generation in Power Systems: A Short Course on the Integration and Interconnection of Wind Power Plants into Electric Power Systems, September 11-13, 2007 at the offices of the Midwest Independent System Operator in St. Paul, Minn.

This course addresses issues related to interconnecting wind generation to electric utility power systems. Covered topics include wind turbine generator technology, modeling for power system analysis, and conducting planning and operating studies.

Specific highlights include:

The core course curriculum will be supplemented by an optional program on September 14 focusing on computer simulation of wind turbines and wind plants and a tour of the FPL Energy Mower County Wind Energy Facility.

For more information, including details on agenda, registration and accommodations, visit the UWIG web site at http://www.uwig.org/shortcourse2007.html or contact Sandy Smith, 865-691-5540, extension 141 or e-mail sandy@uwig.org. The advance registration deadline is September 5 and registration is limited to the first 35 attendees. A block of rooms has been made available at The Saint Paul Hotel at a rate of $169 a night plus taxes. The block expires August 13.

2007 Technical Workshop and Annual Meeting Recap

The 2007 UWIG Technical Workshop and Annual Meeting held in Anchorage Alaska continued UWIG's tradition of successful meetings with a strong technical focus. The program began July 23 with meetings of the UWIG User Groups as well as an all-day workshop on the tools developed for the UWIG Distributed Wind Impacts Project. The main workshop on July 24-25 had 120 attendees and featured sessions on national developments, wind development activities in Alaska, updates on integration studies, international experience with wind integration, and market and transmission planning. Presentations for this workshop, along with materials for the UWIG User Group meetings, will be made available to UWIG members in the protected part of the UWIG web site (contact Sandy Smith at sandy@uwig.org for login credentials).

UWIG honored Ken Wolf, Reliability Administrator for the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission; Matt Schuerger of Energy Systems Consulting, and Elliot Mainzer, Manager of Transmission Policy and Strategy at the Bonneville Power Administration, as recipients of its Annual Achievement Award. The organization also honored Glenn Cannon, retiring General Manager of Waverly (Iowa) Light & Power for his service to UWIG and promotion of responsible utility usage of wind power. Complete details on the awards can be found on the UWIG web site at http://www.uwig.org/2007awards.htm.

UWIG also conducted elections for its Board of Directors. Henry Durrwachter of Luminant and Elliot Mainzer of Bonneville Power Administration were re-elected. Ron Rebenitsch of Basin Electric Power Cooperative was elected and Cliff Murley of Sacramento Municipal Utility District was elected to complete an unexpired term. Murley was also elected Vice-President of the Board of Directors. The UWIG Board of Directors represents a broad cross section from the investor-owned utility, public power, rural electric cooperative, and ISO/RTO sectors of the electric power industry.

UWIG to Exhibit at CanWEA Conference

UWIG will exhibit at the Canadian Wind Energy Association’s conference and trade show to be held September 29 - October 3 in Quebec City. Drop by Booth 1037 to meet UWIG staff and learn more about what’s going on with the organization.

UWIG Coordinating Special Wind Issue of IEEE Magazine

UWIG Executive Director Charlie Smith is serving as guest editor of the November-December issue of the IEEE Power Engineering Society Power & Energy Magazine, which will address the integration of wind power plants into utility power systems. Charlie and co-editor Brian Parsons of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) are reprising their roles from the November-December 2005 issue, which provided an outstanding collection of articles from well-respected industry professionals on the full range of integration issues. That particular issue serves as a standard reference document and tutorial on the subject. The 2005 issue was so well-received and the field is advancing so rapidly that UWIG is coordinating a complete update for the November-December 2007 issue, an effort well underway. Reprints of the 2005 issue will be available at the UWIG booth at the CanWEA conference.
