UWIG to Honor Nick Miller and Jack Cadogan for Contributions to Understanding and Growth of Wind PowerReston, Va. - April 4, 2005 - The Utility Wind Interest Group (UWIG) announced today that Nick Miller, Principal Consultant with GE Energy and Jack Cadogan, Program Manager with the U.S. Department of Energy's Wind Energy Program, will be the 2005 recipients of its Annual Achievement Award. The citation for the award notes Miller as providing "outstanding contributions to the advancement of utility compatible wind turbine technology" and Cadogan for making "sustained contributions to the integration of wind power in the United States." UWIG President Brad Reeve will present the award to Miller and Cadogan at UWIG's annual meeting held April 12 in Minneapolis, Minn. According to Charles Smith, UWIG executive director, the award recognizes Miller's role in applying power system analysis to modeling, operation, and control of variable speed wind turbines on power systems: "Nick has made numerous contributions to the technical advancement and industry acceptance of large-scale wind power generation facilities. He has been a key contributor in a number of areas, including addressing wind turbine low voltage ride through, development of grid codes, wind turbine and wind plant power flow and stability models, and promoting general industry understanding of the issues associated with wind plant interconnection and wind turbine and plant performance. It has been a pleasure to work through UWIG with Nick and his colleagues to increase the level of understanding between the wind plant development community and the electric power industry," he said. Smith noted that Cadogan's involvement with wind, specifically the DOE Wind Energy Program, spans over twenty years: "Over the years, Jack has carried out a broad range of responsibilities aimed at the advancement of wind technology and applications. He has served as DOE's expert on analyses of the value of wind in power systems, and has demonstrated a long-term commitment to addressing issues related to integrating wind power into the electric grid. Jack has been a strong supporter of the UWIG concept and our activities from the start. Jack is respected throughout the wind community as one who speaks his mind, seeks the truth, and works tirelessly to expand the role of wind power nationwide." The UWIG annual meeting is being held in conjunction with a workshop on wind integration co-sponsored by UWIG, the American Wind Energy Association, and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. UWIG nonmembers are welcome to attend both events. The Utility Wind Interest Group (UWIG) was established in 1989 to provide a forum for the critical analysis of wind technology for utility applications and to serve as a source of credible information on the status of wind technology and deployment. The group's mission is to accelerate the appropriate integration of wind power for utility applications through the coordinated efforts and actions of its members, in collaboration with The U.S. Department of Energy, its National Renewable Energy Laboratory and utility research organizations. The UWIG currently has 69 members spanning the United States, Canada, and Europe, including investor-owned, public power, and rural electric cooperative utilities; transmission system operators; and associate member corporate, government, and academic organizations.
